85-10: Cooling Tower Wood Sampling and Analyses: A Case Study
Description
85-10: Cooling Tower Wood Sampling and Analyses: A Case StudyExtensive wood sampling and analyses programs were initiated on crossflow and counterflow cooling towers that have been in service since 1951 and 1955, respectively. Wood samples were taken from all areas of the towers and were subjected to biological, chemical and physical tests. The tests and results for the analyses are discussed. The results indicate the degree of wood deterioration, and areas of the towers that experience the most advanced degree
Cooling towers gained real popularity with the advent of World War II and the accompanying industrial expansion
more typically
The present trend in the design of power generation facilities is toward increasing size and capacity
Sets forth guidelines for selecting fasteners and identifies and specifies materials typically used in cooling tower fasteners
The model is based on theoretical considerations

the supply of this precious natural resource has dwindled to a dangerously low level and is no longer able to handle the huge heat removal chores of industry without alarming thermal effects
The simplified awl penetration test commonly used by contractors during inspections of wood cooling towers would be more reliable if penetration data were correlated to mechanical properties
boilers have been very promising
The predicted power reduction using the new airfoils was 1% to 2%
