The Story The Shoofly quilt pattern is a variation on the 9 patch and originated around 1850. It was named after a wild plant called Clover Broom or shoo fly. It is one of a few historical blocks that were thought to have been part of a quilt code used in the Underground Railroad to signal a path to freedom. The history is as compelling
