Description
Tsutsugaki Furoshiki - "Three Friends of Winter"Traditional wrapping cloth decorated with tsutsugaki. The central crest depicts ivy and karabana flowers, and is surrounded on all sides with pine, plum, and bamboo. This pieces panels are hand stitched together and the corners have been reinforced with sashiko. Kanji is stitched into one of the corners, presumably the owner's name. Dimensions: 52. 5 x 56in; 133 x 142 cm Early 1900's
Indigo sakiori kotatsugake
The proper outside cotton has an exquisitely soft hand from decades of wear
It is backed with a variety of commercial shima cottons and is sashiko stitched together
The result is an especially finely woven cotton

I've had this piece on display for some time now and it's overall atmosphere is incredible
in this case with a warp and weft ikat pattern
The shibori process is arashi shibori - the cloth is wrapped around a pole and then dyed
well worn indigo tsutsugaki wedding futon cover with baku (tapir) motif
It is in very good condition with some slight discoloration
dyed with botanical indigo
